TMJ

Specialised physiotherapy unit for the temporomandibular joint in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: jaw pain, clicking, bruxism, headaches and neck tension.

About this area

A physiotherapy speciality within our Specialised Physiotherapy area. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull, just in front of each ear. It is involved every time you speak, chew, swallow or yawn, so any problem with it shows up in everyday life.

What is TMJ dysfunction?

We speak of temporomandibular dysfunction when the joint, its muscles or the surrounding tissues stop working normally. It does not always appear as jaw pain: it often shows up as headaches, neck discomfort or pressure in the ear, which is why it can go unnoticed for a long time.

Signs worth assessing

  • Pain in the jaw, temple or in front of the ear, especially when chewing.
  • Clicking or noises when opening and closing the mouth.
  • Limited opening or a locked jaw.
  • Recurring headaches and neck tension.
  • Tooth wear, clenching or grinding (bruxism).
  • A blocked-ear sensation, ringing or dizziness with no ENT cause.

How we approach it

The TMJ is not assessed in isolation: the jaw, the cervical spine and posture work as one system, and the origin of the symptom is not always where it hurts. That is why we start with an assessment that looks at the whole picture and sets out an individualised plan for your case.

It is an approach that is often coordinated with dentistry, orthodontics or ENT when the case calls for it.

You will be supported by physiotherapists with specific training in the TMJ. Book your assessment appointment.
