Pelvic Floor

About this area

A physiotherapy speciality within our Specialised Physiotherapy area. A weakened pelvic floor can lead to urinary incontinence, prolapse (descent of the intra-abdominal organs), sexual dysfunction or low back pain, in both women and men.

What exactly is the pelvic floor?

It is a group of muscles and ligaments that close the lower part of the abdominal cavity. Its role is to hold the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, vagina and rectum) in the right position so they can work properly. Although the pelvic floor is popularly associated only with women, a weakened pelvic floor can also cause functional problems in men: toning this area supports ejaculation control, improves sexual relations and helps prevent possible prostate inflammation.

We have pelvic floor technology pioneered in the Canary Islands, such as INDIBA® ACTIV and its electrodes for intracavitary treatment. INDIBA® ACTIV treatment offers the following benefits:

  • Reduces incontinence, allowing a quick return to daily activities without urine leaks.
  • Faster recovery from tears and episiotomies.
  • Reduces the risk of haemorrhoids.
  • Keeps the vaginal muscles toned for a full sexual life.
  • Helps prevent prostatitis.

The male pelvic floor after prostate cancer

The role of the pelvic floor physiotherapist has proven very important in improving urinary incontinence in men after prostatectomy (partial or radical removal of the prostate). Starting physiotherapy early (within the first 6 months after surgery) achieves better results than a late start. Prostate enlargement can also cause symptoms affecting the male pelvic floor, the most common being urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction.

You will be guided by physiotherapists specialised in the Pelvic Floor, who provide specific treatments for pelvic floor prevention and care. Book your assessment appointment.
