Improvement of urinary incontinence in men after prostatectomy.
About this technique
The role of the pelvic floor physiotherapist has proven very important in improving urinary incontinence in men after prostatectomy (partial or radical removal of the prostate).
A study entitled “Early versus late physiotherapy intervention for the treatment of male post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence” concluded that, according to its results, starting physiotherapy early (within the first 6 months after surgery) for urinary incontinence following radical prostatectomy is better than a late start, as patients improved more significantly.
Prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) is the surgery to remove all or part of the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue.
Prostate enlargement happens to all men as they age, and its exact cause is not fully understood.
This enlargement can cause symptoms affecting the male pelvic floor, the most common being urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
After this type of surgery, it is very important to see a physiotherapist specialised in the pelvic floor to reduce or resolve these symptoms.
At Akro you can count on the guidance of our colleague Judith Olguín, a physiotherapist specialised in the Pelvic Floor, for specific treatments focused on pelvic floor prevention and care.
