Pelvic Pain and Physiotherapy

Chronic pelvic pain: possible causesChronic pelvic pain is one of the most significant problems related to the pelvic floor today, as it is highly disabling for the patient: the structures of the pelvic floor perform numerous functions that help our body carry out the activities of daily life.

It is important to know that pelvic pain is not normal — not during sexual intercourse, nor after childbirth once some time has passed.

This problem affects both men (pain in the penis, testicles, urethra, etc.) and women (pain in the deep or superficial muscles of the perineum, in the lower abdomen, etc.).

Managing this type of pain is no easy task, as it sometimes has multiple causes. To diagnose the problem and improve symptoms, a multidisciplinary team is essential, including the specialist doctor, a psychologist if needed, and the physiotherapist. The physiotherapist plays a fundamental role within this team in the effectiveness of the treatment of these dysfunctions, which is tailored to the cause of the pain and the patient's condition.

Some of the most common conditions within chronic male pelvic pain are chronic bacterial prostatitis, urethral pain syndrome, post-vasectomy pain and pain following urological surgery. In women, they include pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, postpartum scar pain, interstitial cystitis, pain due to psychosocial causes, musculoskeletal problems and dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse).

At Akro you can count on Judith Olguín, a physiotherapist specialised in the pelvic floor, who can assess your case.
