Focused shockwave therapy

A non-invasive therapy that uses high-energy acoustic waves, directed under ultrasound guidance at specific musculoskeletal structures, to modulate pain and stimulate biological processes linked to tissue repair.

About this technique

It works through mechanotransduction, a process in which the mechanical stimuli generated by the acoustic waves are converted into biochemical signals that activate different cellular responses.

The waves can stimulate neovascularisation, modulate the activity of inflammatory mediators, support remodelling of the extracellular matrix and activate cellular mechanisms involved in tissue repair. They also act on pain transmission pathways, helping to modulate pain.

At Akro, ultrasound examination identifies the location of the injury, assesses the characteristics of the affected tissue, detects any calcifications and determines the depth of the structure to be treated.

Based on this information, the specialist sets the treatment parameters, adjusting the energy, frequency and number of pulses to the condition and the individual patient.
